I had typed up a post about the “not so nitty gritty” details of our fertility journey so far, but it became more about me and my best friend the deeper I got. Well, today is her birthday, so I’ve decided to share a little bit about our first IUI experience, which she was a HUGE part of!! I’m also going to give you a little insight into our friendship and what being a best friend is all about!! Ashleigh Hicks Ray, here’s to you on your 32nd birthday!!
Best friends don’t just know your stories, they are a part of them!
We first met in the 6th grade, we were 11 or 12, I honestly don’t remember and I’m not gonna try to figure it out. It’s been a long time. We really didn’t become “best friends” till sometime in the 7th grade, but man, we became inseparable fast!! We did EVERYTHING together!! We may have even gotten into some trouble together!
To say we have been through a lot together is an understatement! We’ve seen friends and boyfriends come and go. We stood with each other as we married our hubbies, who are now best buds themselves! I have moved all over the country and put thousands of miles between us. We’ve shared so many fun times together at the beach, at concerts, and shopping. We even defied the odds and lived together our last two years of college. Through it all, we’ve remained best friends, and our love for each other grows stronger the older we get. I guess we just have a much deeper appreciation for where we’ve been, what we’ve been through, and where we are going!!
Thank heavens the hard times have been few and far between, but man they’ve been HARD! Ash and her mom were in a car accident our senior year of highschool. When they came to me at school and told me, not knowing their condition, I felt like someone had ripped my heart out. Ash stayed with us while her mom was in the hospital undergoing an intense recovery. I will never, ever forget the moment we got home, and we spent, what seemed like hours, picking shards of glass out of her hair and scalp. I will never forget being so incredibly thankful for her life in that very moment!! I could’ve lost my best friend and my second mama, BUT God knew I would need them to encourage me through life!
Fast forward lots of years later, to when our fertility journey began… Our first IUI cycle was in January! To say I was anxious would be an understatement! It was all brand new! It was exciting but scary! It was even scarier because when my cycle came around, we realized Nicholas wouldn’t be in town for the procedure. Dilemma huh?
So who was gonna go? For those of you who don’t know me well, I don’t like doing things by myself! This was a big deal! My sister lives a million miles away (at least it seems like it), and my parents were still in Louisiana keeping Annie Clare. I knew without question who I would ask to go with me first and without hesitation she said she would be glad too!!
You guessed it, Ash made a scary day, not so scary!! She calmed my nerves and sat patiently with me as we waited for almost 3 hours. She never complained! I did FaceTime Nicholas during the procedure, so he was kind of there! Since our first cycle was our only successful one, we’ve joked that maybe Ash should come to every appointment with us for good luck! If only it was that simple!
When I asked Ash (a new mommy to a 2 month old) to go she did not hesitate to say yes. She said, “maybe my mom can keep Jackson, and if not, we will just take him with us.” Of course her mama didn’t hesitate to keep Jackson, but we would’ve had a ball taking him with us too! I hung out at Ash’s house for a while afterwards and got some good baby snuggles!! It definitely made the crampiness not seem so bad! Sweet Jackson is so good for my soul!! I am soooo thankful she’s given me a sweet boy to love! Praying there’s a little playmate coming along for him soon!
I am incredibly blessed with amazing friends, but Ash is one of kind! She is super witty and she speaks her mind. I can always count on her honest opinion. I know exactly what she’s thinking by her facial expressions. She loves anything and everything sweet! She is the best listener, and she’s always been patient with me. She encourages me, prays for me, and always reminds me that God’s in control. We’ve laughed a lot together and we’ve cried together. We have been through so much in our 20ish years of friendship, and I look forward to enjoying the rest of our lives by each other’s side!
Ash Par, “I thank my God every time I remember you.” Phil 1:3
You believe in me when I don’t believe in myself. You love me when I’m not so easy to love. You make me smile when all I want to do is cry. You are always, always there no matter what! You definitely don’t just know my stories, but you are a huge part of them!
Thanks for being you. Thanks for always loving me. I pray this year pours an abundance of beautiful blessings upon you because you are such a blessing to others!! Happy Birthday!! I love you!
Ecclesiates 4:9-10 “Two are better than one, because they have a good return for their labor. If either of them falls down, one can help the other up. But pity anyone who falls and has no one to help them up.” `
